Marcator – Eine Klangreise durch drei Jahrzehnte
Seit über drei Jahrzehnten steht der Musiker Marcator für stilistische Vielfalt, emotionale Tiefe und ein feines Gespür für musikalische Atmosphären. Den entscheidenden Wendepunkt markierte das Jahr 1993, als ihm das renommierte Label BSC Music einen Plattenvertrag für sein Sub-Label Prudence anbot. Zuvor hatte Marcator seine Werke überwiegend im Eigenverlag veröffentlicht.
Seither lässt sich sein Schaffen in zwei musikalische Linien einteilen, die sich immer wieder kunstvoll durchdringen: Einerseits sind es erzählerische Konzeptalben – teils instrumental, teils mit Gesang –, andererseits rein instrumentale Produktionen, geprägt von Gitarren- und Elektroniksounds.
Zu den wichtigsten Konzeptalben zählen Dreamtime Cycle (1994), Beyond The Mirrors (1996), Necromantra (1998), Evolution (2009) sowie Cimbria – 1883 (2011). Einen besonderen Platz im Werk Marcators nimmt die Trilogie Wattenklänge ein – poetisch-musikalische Hommagen an das norddeutsche Wattenmeer, entstanden in Zusammenarbeit mit Gitarrist Holger Mummert (Wattenklänge I und II, 2001/2003) sowie solo mit Wattenklänge III (2020).
Neben seinen atmosphärischen Solo-Gitarrenalben wie Coconut Time (2007), Song Of The Dodo (2011) und Last Nights Of The Prom (2014) fand Marcator auch mit dem instrumentalen Chillout-Album Inmortal (2019) große Beachtung.
Darüber hinaus engagierte sich Marcator in Bandprojekten wie der Psychedelic-Rockband Z sowie der Singer/Songwriter-Formation Foolswood. Nach deren Auflösung verarbeitete er persönliche Verluste und gesellschaftliche Themen auf dem eindringlichen deutschsprachigen Album Trauerspiel (2020/21). Mit Der Klang der Seele (2022) setzte er diese Auseinandersetzung musikalisch fort.
Ein besonderes Highlight markierte 2023 die Zusammenarbeit mit der Stadt Wesselburen: Inspiriert von der Lyrik Friedrich Hebbels vertonte Marcator 14 Gedichte des Dichters unter dem Titel Friedrich Hebbel – Lieder von Liebe, Tod und Leidenschaft.
2025 erscheint sein bisher ambitioniertestes Werk: PanAroma – ein dreiteiliges, rein instrumentales Album mit musikalischen Gästen an Drums, Didgeridoo und Altsaxophon. Das Werk steht exemplarisch für Marcators künstlerische Haltung: Offenheit, Tiefe und die Liebe zur musikalischen Vielfalt – von ruhigen Klanglandschaften über Weltmusik-Einflüsse bis hin zu jazzigen und rockigen Momenten.
Marcator – A sound journey through three decades
For over three decades, the musician Marcator has been known for stylistic diversity, emotional depth and a keen sense of musical atmospheres. The decisive turning point came in 1993, when the renowned label BSC Music offered him a recording contract for its Prudence label. Previously Marcator had mainly self-published his works.
Since then, his oeuvre can be divided into two musical lines, which intertwine artfully time and again: On the one hand, there are narrative concept albums – partly instrumental, partly with vocals – and on the other, purely instrumental productions, characterized by guitar and electronic sounds.
The most important concept albums include Dreamtime Cycle (1994), Beyond The Mirrors (1996), Necromantra (1998), Evolution (2009) and Cimbria – 1883 (2011). A special place in Marcator’s oeuvre is occupied by the trilogy Wattenklänge – poetic-musical homages to the North German Wadden Sea, created in collaboration with guitarist Holger Mummert (Wattenklänge I and II, 2001/2003) and solo with Wattenklänge III (2020).
In addition to his atmospheric solo guitar albums such as Coconut Time (2007), Song Of The Dodo (2011) and Last Nights Of The Prom (2014), Marcator also attracted a great deal of attention with the instrumental chill-out album Inmortal (2019).
Marcator was also involved in band projects such as the psychedelic rock band Z and the singer/songwriter formation Foolswood. After their dissolution, he dealt with personal losses and social issues on the impressive German-language album Trauerspiel (2020/21). He continued this musical exploration with Der Klang der Seele (2022).
A special highlight in 2023 was his collaboration with the town of Wesselburen: inspired by the poetry of Friedrich Hebbel, Marcator set 14 of the poet’s poems to music under the title “Friedrich Hebbel – Lieder von Liebe, Tod und Leidenschaft”.
2025 sees the release of his most ambitious work to date: PanAroma – a three-part, purely instrumental album with musical guests on drums, didgeridoo and alto saxophone. The work exemplifies Marcator’s artistic approach: openness, depth and a love of musical diversity – from calm soundscapes and world music influences to jazzy and rocky moments.
